For those who don't know it yet, this is the greatest 7th symphony of Beethoven in the history of recording and probably performed by the greatest conductor of all time. A public performance in the middle of the war, of extreme tension and culminating in a finale with a rhythm of increasing rapidity that makes you dizzy. Indeed, Wilhelm Furtwangler is almost the only conductor who is completely free with the measure and who is able to use rubato with his whole orchestra in an improvised way. Indeed, rehearsals were of little importance to him, the most important thing was the present time and the construction of an overall architecture leading to the climax of the work, all this directed with an iron fist. In Furtwangler's hands, everything is living matter, and Furtwangler, like a potter who shapes his clay, shapes his orchestra. The musical experience becomes almost mystical. We no longer speak of musical notes but of matter, of telluric force..
