Japan gains an interest group in US Congress
A pair of U.S. lawmakers have started Congress' first caucus on
Japan and will urge the Obama administration to work with the
Japanese government on the Trans-Pacific Partnership and other matters.
...Devin Nunes, a Republican from California, and fellow House of Representatives
member Joaquin Castro, a Texas Democrat, are looking to expand
their new Japan Caucus, which gets down to business soon.
,,,Members of Congress build such alliances to seek action on
causes ranging from algae to veterinary medicine. The Congressional
Caucus on Korea, for instance, pushed successfully for a free
trade agreement with South Korea.

Arguably the leading authority on Japan in Congress in
recent memory, Japanese-American Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii died in 2012.
In his final years, the long-serving Inouye had the ear of both
President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. He was known
on occasion to give voice to the Japanese government's positions
on issues such as relocating the U.S. Marines' controversial Futenma base in Okinawa.
