Whereas the present tense together with a time reference doesn't have the same commitment,
"I'm going to New York next year." -- sometime, probably, but not totally sure when.

これによく似たことは、ある本の中に次のように書いている。

The present continuous indicates that we have a firm intention or have made a definite
decision to do something, although this may not already be arranged:

-- Are you seeing the doctor again next week? (OR Are you going to see...?)
-- I'm not asking Tom to the party. (OR I'm not going to ask.)
(Advanced Grammar in Use, p.20)

(3) Q: "Will you dry the dishes?"
Answer 1: "I will" (an affirmation, a promise, a positive statement)
Answer 2: "I am GOING TO!" (a whine, a complaint, the thing a teenager says to her parent)
"I am going to get to that, sometime" or "I plan or intend to at some future point, but not now."

これは、確かにその通り、ネイティブの言う通りであって正しいと思う。これだけでなく、
未来を示す表現としての be going to do, be doing, be to do などについては、
日本人の学者が書いた論文の中の解説がわかりやすいと、別のスレッドで他の人が
次の論文を紹介してくれた。これを俺はざあっとしか読んでいないが、確かにわかりやすくまとめている。
